Using Hibana's arsenal of a long Katana the primary weapon , short daggers achieve less damage, but score a higher combo multiplier , Shuriken long range projectiles , and various Ninjutsu spells, the game challenges the player to achieve as high a score as possible while eliminating the opposing threat. Nightshade also includes aspects of platforming. With Hibana's ability to dash in mid-air, the game requires the player to use this ability to bypass holes and hazards.

Game mechanics restrict Hibana to only a double-jump and an air-dash before she falls, requiring the player to strike enemies in mid-flight to stay in the air.

The control is poor and the graphics are only average for this type of game. The quest is kind of fun but only the first time around. They should of saved this one for the SNES. The high-res graphics required for Nightshade just isn't possible on the 8-bit machine.

The control could use a little more work, and the quest isn't very long either. Nightshade is average. The local hero - Vortex - has just been found dead after trying to take on an evil clan of gangsters that are led by the notorious Sutekh.

The Incubus eventually killed all the human inhabitants of the Land of Nightshades and rendered it a wasteland.
