What Did I Say - Lightnin Hopkins - The Blues Giant (Vinyl, LP, Album)

On The Essential Recordings of Lightnin' Hopkins , Purple Pyramid Records seems to have pulled together some of the roughest, poorly mastered tracks from this legendary bluesman's career. While surface noise and acetate clicks and pops are expected and even relished on old blues LPs, several of the recordings on this CD seem to have been recorded underwater and have bizarre stereo shifts from left to right.

The term "essential" is also a misnomer, since "Mojo Hand" is the only real Lightnin' Hopkins classic included. Oddly enough, "Big Mama Jump" and "Shotgun Blues" are the only songs referenced in the liner notes but do not appear on the album. While there are points of brilliance the Ray Charles -styled "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and the forgotten Texas blues Christmas classic "Santa" , even hardcore country blues fans will be disappointed with this release.
