Musically this album mimics the sound of my favourite Hawkwind period and that is down to the choice of musicians. Apart from Brian Eno on synth, the other musicians are all pretty much Hawkwind members, even Dave Brock plays lead guitar on one track. Rhythm section Lemmy and Simon King are present throughout, Lemmy's contribution can not be understated, hiss trademark rhythm bass ties the whole sound together magnificently.
For an album made in the early 70's it does not sound in the least dated, with Eno and Hawkwind's Del Dettmar on synths a track like 'Gremlins' which also has a superbly effective guest vocal from the 'God of Hell fire' - Arthur Brown moves into proto techno territory. It could have been done by Kraftwerk who along with Hawkwind were pioneers of electronic sounds. The song writing is superb, the music rocks hard, if you need a reference point, well known Hawkwind track 'Urban Guerilla' is very representative of the sound and would not sound out of place on this album.
I believe this is Calvert's greatest vocal performance and it is a testament to the quality of the material that perhaps the three most rocking tracks, 'Ejection', 'The Right Stuff' and 'Aero Space Age Inferno' all regularly return to feature in Hawkwind's live show.
The sketches between tracks are comedy gold, displaying a sophisticated, very British humour and help expand on the album's theme. To put the quality of this album in context, I genuinely believe it is better than any Hawkwind album, a bold claim for sure, but one I will stand by. Let's forget Hawkwind for a minute, if you have a penchant for intelligent hard rock which embraces electronica and has humour in abundance, you need this album.
It's been an underground gem for decades, time to go overground. On paper, this release ticks all the boxes. Calvert at his most eccentric, telling a tale so bizarre it NEEDS telling, pretty much all the Hawkwind crew backing him up, Viv Stanshall and others guesting This was the one album of the period I had never owned.
Lucky Lief and the Longships stayed in my LP collection very briefly as it was not good at all. It's just not very good. Not the most constructive of reviews, I know. For me, the massive spacerock appeal of Hawkwind begins with the first album, reaches perfection in X In Search of Space and Doremi Fasol Latido, becomes most intense with Space Ritual Given that Lockheed is at the end of this, arguably the best, United Artists period, a listener might hope for some of the magic of the time.
I bought a cheap reissue vinyl copy of this album on spec in my local record store. It blew me away and I just had to have a cd copy for the car. I have now tracked down a first pressing gatefold vinyl copy too.
This album will not appeal to everyone but others will love it I am sure. If you like everything about Hawkwind, and need to have as much as you can relating to the band, then this may be as essential to you, as it is to me. Having said that.. And admittedly it's the bonus tracks that have an immediacy, that the rest of the album may not have.
