Delivering in all departments this monster album although it is said the vocals were re-recorded in a studio as Halford had a bad throat at the live gig still hits a nerve every time you listen to it.
Apparently Les Binks drummer was not really on the photo of the album cover as he had left and Halford conveniently blocked the view. Pity as the drumming on this album is legendary. Unleashed In The East will always be at the top of my favorites and this version has some extra tracks on it too but not from the same gig.
Unleashed is one of these iconic albums that you must have in your collection. If you are one of the more mature rockers then you probably have. I got the vinyl when it was released with the limited edition EP. This is Priest in their prime and a much heavier album than Live! The album is superb and listening to it brings me back to my youth.
It has good balance, that is every track rocks. However, the omission of 'Realms' is simply heracy. That track would have lifted the album to another level. One of the best songs Priest have done. The two filler tracks actually work well but not including the entire EP is unforgivable.
Still, buy it anyway. The best live Album for me apart from Made in Japan by Deep Purple , great tracks, fantastic sound, show's Priest at there best. Judas Priest 's first official live recording has always been met with equal amounts of acclaim and controversy: acclaim from those who consider it an excellent summation of the metal legend's s output, and controversy from the critics and industry insiders who criticized what they believed to be a heavily overdubbed and studio-enhanced performance, mockingly naming it Unleashed in the Studio at times.
Before delving deeper into this issue, let it be said that except for a few unfortunate omissions "Hell Bent for Leather," "Better by You, Better Than Me" the track listing here is quite impressive. Along with powerful versions of such storming anthems as "Exciter" and "Running Wild," the band delivers the definitive version of the prog metallic "Sinner," and competent versions of their popular covers tunes, "Diamonds and Rust" and "The Green Manalishi With the Two-Pronged Crown.
As for the "live" dilemma, in the late '90s estranged singer Rob Halford would claim in interviews that, while the band's playing was indeed recorded entirely live, his vocals had been ruined in the original mix, forcing him to re-record them in one take in a concert-like setting.
I am very lucky to have these guys onboard," he said. Downing reconnected with Binks in for the first time in nearly four decades. Downing later described the experience of meeting his former bandmate as "great" and called Les "one of the greatest drummers in the world and a good friend and a great guy. Les later told Downing 's official web site that the making of the live album "caused a rift between me and [ PRIEST 's] manager and ultimately led to my decision to leave the band.
I just didn't see the point in continuing to work with a band whose manager didn't want me to receive any payment for that live album.
