I'm not particularly an avid fan of Cliff's - it was The Shadows who were for me - but nevertheless he's been a consistently good performer since and deserves more credit for his music than he is often accorded.
It was with that in mind that I purchased this book but having read it I feel slightly disappointed because Cliff at least to me comes across as a bit one dimensional and dare I say it somewhat shallow and the constant references to the abundance of money he has are maybe a bit over the top.
As he has done in numerous interviews over the years, he pours scorn on his humble beginnings living in a council house but surely many of his fans still reside in those properties and perhaps it would be good for him to remember that. The book gives the impression that the most important thing for him is getting into the charts with every record he releases but surely there must be more important things in his life now after so many years at the top? Also, I did wonder if Cliff or anyone else on his team had read through the book before it went to print as he wrongly identifies two of The Shadows in the photograph section!
Cliff has been a great performer over the years but maybe next time he decides to bring a book out he should look for someone whose writing style does him more justice. Bought this for my mum who is the biggest Cliff fan out there.
She's loved him since she was 15yrs old. Was a bit dubious to buy her a book as she rarely reads anything but a quick magazine as she's always so busy, but she absolutely loved this book. I hadn't realised this book had been around for so long. She said she's read a few books about Cliff over the years but these were always in other people's words whereas this book is written by Cliff himself, all about his dad, his mum, his sisters and him growing up.
She really enjoyed it. There's another autobiography out in Oct called The Dreamer which is his next own autobiography and I've already preordered this for her.
Not a big Cliff fan really but always seemed like a nice fella. The book goes back and forth a bit in time it starts as it should with his growing up and his rise to fame but after that it goes on with just the major events in his life with each chapter. It is not terribly detailed he doesn't go into much about his films or even his music that much really and not much is said about his relationship with sue barker or any of his female relationships which is what I wanted to have a nosey about!
What he does talk a lot about is of course his religious beliefs, his charity work and his many friends and property's, he does come across as an ordinary kind of bloke really and is quite honest about his views on various subjects.
Over all I found the book a very easy and quick read and its nice to know everything that is said in the book is from the horses mouth so you get an insight into the real cliff, all be it not his love life. I am so pleasrd that my book arrived on time. Enjoying readind it. MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.
